Pick Six: Players of the Week

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

Trumaine Johnson, CB, Rams (NFL): Attaching himself to Calvin Johnson on Sunday and limiting the Lions’ superstar receiver to just one catch for 16 yards probably would’ve been enough to get Trumaine Johnson on this list. But throw in his 58-yard interception return for a touchdown, and that made it an easy decision. Also impressive is that Johnson, who added five tackles in the 21-14 victory, isn’t even considered the Rams’ top cornerback; he stepped up to the task of guarding “Megatron” while No. 1 CB Janoris Jenkins was out with an injury.

Kurt Coleman, SS, Panthers (NFL): With QB/MVP Cam Newton headlining the offense and LB Luke Kuechly spearheading the defense, Coleman is one of the overlooked contributors who is a big part of Carolina’s 13-0 start. In Sunday’s 38-0 domination of the Falcons, Coleman intercepted his seventh pass of the season — tying him for the NFL lead with Bengals safety Reggie Nelson — and made a team-high nine tackles. Six secondary standouts from football’s weekend that was:

Richard Sherman, CB, Seahawks (NFL) — Just when you were ready to write Seattle off as a serious Super Bowl contender, the reigning champs churned out a pair of near-flawless defensive performances in respective 19-3 victories over NFC West rivals Arizona and San Francisco. In the Thanksgiving night win over the 49ers, Sherman had two interceptions; one that set up the game’s only touchdown, and another that ended one of the few San Francisco drives in which they appeared to have a chance at sniffing the end zone.

Branden Leston, S, Western Kentucky (NCAA) — The redshirt sophomore recorded eight tackles and intercepted Heisman-contending QB Rakeem Cato three times in the Hilltoppers’ 67-66 overtime upset of nationally-ranked Marshall on Saturday. Continue reading

Pick Six: Players of the Week

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

Jalen Ramsey, FS, Florida State (NCAA) — The sophomore safety was just as clutch as superstar QB Jameis Winston during the Seminoles’ 30-26 comeback win over Miami, making big plays all over the field in the second half. Ramsey finished with three tackles, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and the victory-sealing interception with under a minute to go.

Johnthan Banks, CB, Buccaneers (NFL) — Banks facilitated a turnover on the game’s first play from scrimmage when his hit separated Washington receiver Niles Paul from the ball, which was intercepted by Tampa Bay linebacker Danny Lansanah. Later in the first quarter of the Bucs’ eventual 27-7 win, Banks snagged a deflected pass for an interception of his own, which he returned for a touchdown after trucking Washington QB Robert Griffin III near the goal line.
