AFC defensive backs to watch in the NFL playoffs

Malcolm Butler

The NFL playoff field is set — an eclectic mix of high-powered offenses (the Rams score a league-best 29.9 points per game) and stingy defenses (the Vikings allow a league-low 15.8 points per game), hotshot rookies (league rushing leader Kareem Hunt) and Hall of Fame locks who have been playing forever (Tom Brady), postseason regulars (Steelers) and teams that haven’t been to the playoff party in a long time (Bills).

Since they say defense wins championships, that means there are some defensive backs whose play will mean a lot in determining how the road to the Super Bowl is paved. Continue reading

Jaguars cornerback tandem tabbed to start in Pro Bowl

A.J. Bouye, Jalen Ramsey

When free agent cornerback A.J. Bouye signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, penciled in to start opposite 2016 rookie sensation Jalen Ramsey, it gave the Jaguars arguably the NFL’s best pair of corners — on paper.

This week, that status was all but confirmed, as Bouye and Ramsey were selected as the starting cornerbacks for the AFC in the 2018 Pro Bowl. The NFL’s annual all-star game is scheduled for Jan. 28 in Orlando.

Logan Ryan

Logan Ryan

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

1. Logan Ryan, CB, Patriots (NFL) — Early in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s AFC divisional playoff game, the Texans forced the Patriots to punt and, facing an eight-point deficit, got the ball with a chance to tie.

On the first play of the ensuing drive, however, Ryan intercepted Houston QB Brock Osweiler and returned it to the 6-yard line. New England punched it into the end zone a couple of plays later, going up by two touchdowns and essentially sealing the eventual 34-16 victory.

Ryan finished with seven tackles, an interception, a sack and three pass breakups. Continue reading

Pick Six: Players of the Week

Delvin-Breaux-1

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

Delvin Breaux, CB, Hamilton (CFL) — The Tiger-Cats are going to the Grey Cup, due in large part to Breaux’s performance in Sunday’s 40-24 win over Montreal in the Canadian Football League’s Eastern Final. In addition to holding Duron Carter, the CFL’s third-leading receiver during the regular season, to just three receptions for 25 yards, Breaux also had one of Hamilton’s three interceptions against Alouettes QB Jonathan Crompton.

Marcus Gilchrist, SS, Chargers (NFL) — His interception at the goal line with 56 seconds to go saved the day in San Diego’s 27-24 win over St. Louis on Sunday. It was especially important for Gilchrist because about a minute before that play, he’d given up the touchdown that cut the Chargers’ lead to three. Gilchrist finished with seven tackles to go with the pick. Continue reading
