NFL’s Top 100: Casey Hayward (#59)

Casey Hayward

After leading the NFL in interceptions in 2017 with seven picks, Casey Hayward entered the 2017 season vying for the unofficial title of the league’s best cornerback.

The Los Angeles Chargers star played well enough to stay in that competition, and moved up five spots to No. 59 on this year’s edition of the NFL Network’s Top 100 player ranking.

Hayward was named All-Pro second team along with Jacksonville cornerback A.J. Bouye, behind first-teamers Jalen Ramsey of the Jaguars and Xavier Rhodes of the Vikings. There are a few other corners that get more mainstream attention than Hayward, such as Washington’s Josh Norman, San Francisco’s Richard Sherman, and the L.A. Rams duo of Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters. Continue reading

Jaguars cornerback tandem tabbed to start in Pro Bowl

A.J. Bouye, Jalen Ramsey

When free agent cornerback A.J. Bouye signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in March, penciled in to start opposite 2016 rookie sensation Jalen Ramsey, it gave the Jaguars arguably the NFL’s best pair of corners — on paper.

This week, that status was all but confirmed, as Bouye and Ramsey were selected as the starting cornerbacks for the AFC in the 2018 Pro Bowl. The NFL’s annual all-star game is scheduled for Jan. 28 in Orlando.

Bouye had six interceptions this season to go with 17 pass breakups and 49 tackles. Ramsey registered four interceptions, 17 pass breakups and 53 tackles. Continue reading

Pick Six: Players of the Week

Byron Maxwell

Byron Maxwell

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

1. Byron Maxwell, CB, Dolphins (NFL): Outweighed by about 30 pounds and giving up three inches in height to the monster of a receiver that is Brandon Marshall, Maxwell already had a tall task ahead of him in Sunday’s game against the Jets.

It was made worse in the days leading up to the game, as Marshall dragged Maxwell into a one-sided war of words by complaining about Maxwell’s physical style of coverage and accusing Maxwell of constantly holding and grabbing.

Maxwell didn’t return fire in front of the media. He just went out and held Marshall to six catches for 45 yards in Miami’s 27-23 victory. Continue reading

Pick Six: Players of the Week

Jaire Alexander

Jaire Alexander

Six secondary standouts from football’s week that was:

Jaire Alexander, CB, Louisville (NCAA): The sophomore cornerback and kick returner scored on a 69-yard punt return, had another punt return for 60 yards, and recovered a fumble in the Cardinals’ 63-20 rout of (then) 2nd-ranked Florida State on Saturday. QB Lamar Jackson received and will continue to receive almost all of the attention for (now) 3rd-ranked Louisville, but Alexander is one of the so-far unsung weapons who have this team looking like arguably the best in the country.

Casey Hayward, CB, Chargers (NFL): Hayward is my MVDB this week because my fantasy football opponent had Jaguars QB Blake Bortles and WR Allen Robinson, and Hayward picked Bortles off twice while helping limit Robinson to just three catches in San Diego’s 38-14 victory on Sunday. Hayward also had four tackles and two pass breakups. Continue reading
