Darius Slay’s breakout season happened a whole year after it was originally scheduled.
In 2016, the Detroit Lions signed Slay to a four-year, $48.1 million contract extension, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid cornerbacks. He proceeded to have a good season, helping the Lions make the playoffs, but not great.
In 2017, Slay really showed why Detroit made the big investment in him.
The man nicknamed “Big Play Slay” tied for the league lead with eight interceptions last season, led the league with 26 pass breakups, and made 60 tackles. He was voted to his first Pro Bowl and named first team All-Pro.
He also made his debut on the NFL Network’s annual Top 100 ranking, coming in at No. 49 as voted by his peers in the league.
After last season’s schedule was rich with elite receiver matchups for Slay, the 2018 slate presents some of the best quarterbacks in the league to test Slay’s playmaking ability.
Tom Brady comes to Detroit in Week 3 and Aaron Rodgers of courses faces the Lions twice. Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, Kirk Cousins (twice), Jimmy Garoppolo and Jared Goff are also scheduled to meet the Lions and force Slay to earn any more accolades that may be coming his way.
